World Sight Day: Simple Steps to Protect Your Sight for Life

Today is World Sight Day, held on the second Thursday of October to raise awareness of eye health and sight loss around the world. It’s a powerful reminder that a large proportion of sight loss is preventable or treatable, especially when problems are caught early. At Brian D Suttie Opticians in Chesham, protecting our patients’ sight over a lifetime is at the heart of everything we do.

Why prevention matters

Many of the most serious eye conditions, including glaucoma, diabetic eye disease and some forms of macular degeneration, develop slowly and without pain. By the time you notice a change in your vision, damage may already have occurred. Regular eye examinations allow these conditions to be detected at an early stage, when treatment and monitoring are most effective.

Seven simple habits for healthy eyes

  1. Have regular eye examinations. We recommend annual examinations for most adults, as eye health can change significantly in two years.
  2. Know your family history. Glaucoma and macular degeneration can run in families, so let us know if a relative has been affected.
  3. Don’t smoke. Smoking significantly raises the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.
  4. Eat a colourful diet. Leafy greens, oily fish and brightly coloured vegetables provide nutrients that support the retina.
  5. Protect against UV light. Quality sunglasses with full UV protection help shield your eyes year-round.
  6. Look after your general health. Managing blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol benefits your eyes as well as your heart.
  7. Act quickly on sudden changes. New flashes, floaters, a shadow in your vision or a painful red eye need prompt attention.

How modern technology helps

Advances in imaging mean we can now see more of the eye in more detail than ever before. OCT scans reveal the layers of the retina and optic nerve, while ultra-wide-field retinal imaging captures a broad view of the back of the eye. Keeping images over time allows us to spot subtle changes from one visit to the next, often before any symptoms appear.

Look after the people you love, too

World Sight Day is also a good moment to think about family members. Children may not realise they can’t see clearly, and older relatives may put off an appointment. Encouraging a loved one to book an eye test could make a real difference to their future.

Mark World Sight Day by putting your own eye health first. Book an eye examination at Brian D Suttie Opticians in Chesham, and give your sight the care it deserves.
